llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI tools a short map of a website. Check whether a site has one and whether it follows the format.
What it shows
- Title and summaryThe file starts with “# Site name” and a one-line summary in a blockquote.
- SectionsLinks are grouped under H2 headings such as “## Docs” or “## Products”.
- LinksEach page is a Markdown link with a short note: “- [Pricing](https://…): plans and limits”.
Questions
Do ChatGPT or Google read llms.txt?
Not officially, as of 2026. It is a community proposal (llmstxt.org). It is cheap to add and harmless, but robots.txt, clean HTML and structured data matter far more for AI search.
Where does the file go?
At the root of the domain: https://example.com/llms.txt, served as plain text.
Why does my llms.txt show as missing?
Many single-page apps answer every address with their HTML page. The validator only counts a plain-text file.
